Housing is fundamental to human security, well-being, and identity. Yet in times of conflict - whether due to war, forced displacement, or socio-political crises - it often becomes both a casualty and a weapon of war. This Autumn Lecture examines the intricate relationship between housing and conflict.
Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, our Autumn Lecture will integrate insights from leading experts from across urban planning, humanitarian aid, and social justice, using historical and contemporary case studies to illustrate key themes.
Bringing together academics, practitioners, and policymakers, this lecture will critically examine the impact of displacement on urban and rural environments, and the complexities of post-conflict housing reconstruction.
Confirmed speakers for this event include:
- Chair: Professor Beth Watts-Cobbe, Institute for Social Policy, Heriot-Watt University
- Professor Kathy Burrell, Geography & Planning, University of Liverpool
- Professor Sultan Barakat, College of Public Policy, Hamad Bin Khalifa University
- Siobhan Taylor Ward, Housing Solicitor at LawStop
- Professor Philip Brown, Department of Social and Psychological Sciences, University of Huddersfield
We will be announcing the winners of the Ben Pattison Prize 2025 at the Autumn Lecture, and we are delighted to share that Professor Ian Cole (Sheffield Hallam University) will be joining us to lead the celebrations of this new prize.
