Weekly virtual writing retreat for members of the HSA ECR network. Every Wednesday 9-11am between May 27th and August 12th.

This summer the HSA ECR network invites you to join our virtual writing group. This weekly session will provide a space to connect with other ECRs, talk about writing and, most importantly, make serious progress on your writing goals.

The sessions will run each week on Wednesday from 9am to 11am. Each session will consist of a goal-setting check-in, two silent working writing blocks of 45 minutes with a ten-minute break in between, and a brief reflective check-out.

Through the group we will support each other to make significant progress with an output over a 12-week period. This could be a thesis chapter, a journal article or conference paper, a resubmission, or a fellowship application. To get the most from the structured period we also suggest that members pick one, or maximum two, discrete projects they plan to take to the next stage during the 12 weeks.

By meeting regularly, we hope to make a community and create a sense of momentum around projects. For this reason, we ask that participants commit to attending as many sessions as possible and refrain from doing any non-writing work during the weekly writing retreat.

Sessions will be facilitated by Dr Philippa Hughes (MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow, University Rovira i Virgili) supported by HSA ECR Network co-chairs Dr Sadhana Jagannath (Research Associate, Imperial College London) and Dr Nia Rees (Lecturer, University of Cardiff).

In the first session Philippa will present briefly on the rationale of writing groups and how they have helped her in her career so far. She has recently drawn inspiration from Wendy Belcher’s Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks and Paul J. Silvia´s How to Write a Lot.  From both she has identified the importance of short-term goal setting, commitment to a schedule and camaraderie for getting things done. Then we will get writing!

In subsequent sessions there will be a shorter introduction where we share common writing challenges, progress made that week and our goals for the session before getting down to writing. Each session will include 1.5 hours of writing with a break in the middle to connect with each other and chat.
