Special General Meeting 5th November 2pm (online)

Dear Members,

Over the last 30 years the Housing Studies Association has gone from strength to strength, continuing to bring together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders interested in housing education, theory, and research.

Over the last two years, we have faced several challenges, including responding to the global pandemic that prevented our community from meeting face-to-face at our usual annual conference. A key priority for the Executive Committee has been to safeguard the future of the Association, to ensure future generations of housing researchers are able to take forward the HSA’s important work in this complex and diverse field.

A key challenge that has emerged for the Executive Committee is the legal status of the Association. Currently, we are an unincorporated Association and due to changes over the last few years and the increase in size of the housing studies community this is no longer a suitable position. To continue to grow and evolve as an Association, the Executive Committee has developed a plan which proposes that we incorporate as a Limited Company by Guarantee without shares. The aim behind this is to provide greater stability to the Association, reduce the liability to Committee members, and enable the future success of the HSA going forward. As we are a membership organisation this is, of course, something that you as members should have a say over.

You are therefore invited to a virtual Special General Meeting of the Association at 2pm on Friday 5th November to learn about and vote on whether we should take forward these plans for the HSA. The Association is run by members for members on a voluntary basis, and we welcome your valuable input into this important potential change.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the virtual Special General Meeting.

If you have any questions prior to this, please do get in touch – my email address is [email protected].

Best wishes,

Helen Taylor
