Mahmoud is an Early Stage Researcher working on social housing sustainability at the University of Sheffield. His work is part of a Marie Curie Doctoral Training Network called RE-DWELL, which promotes affordable and sustainable housing. Mahmoud is an architect and urban planner with several years of professional experience in engineering consultancy. He is certified as a Green Associate (LEED GA), Certified Green Professional (CGP), a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and an International Associate of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). His research interests include housing studies, sustainable design and planning, and smart resource management.

I am an experienced professional with over 20 years in local government, specializing in housing and homelessness solutions. As the Head of Housing Solutions, I lead nine services and oversee a dedicated team of 100 employees committed to addressing critical housing challenges. My portfolio includes homelessness prevention, choice-based lettings, disabled facilities grants, private sector housing, rough sleeping support, temporary accommodation, and Central Suffolk Lettings. With a background in Economics and a postgraduate, I have also earned professional qualifications, including PRINCE2 certification and CIH Level 7 accreditation. These have equipped me with the skills to manage complex statutory housing requirements, develop effective policies, and deliver high-impact services. I am particularly passionate about tackling homelessness, rural housing challenges, and poverty. Recently, I worked on rural community-led housing projects, collaborating with Community Action Suffolk and Hastoe to address unique local needs. My approach combines strategic leadership with innovative service design, ensuring practical and sustainable solutions. Throughout my career, I have been driven by a commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable populations. I pride myself on fostering collaboration, championing systemic change, and creating resilient services that adapt to evolving demands. Leading in this sector is both a challenge and a privilege, and I remain focused on making a tangible difference in people’s lives through innovative and compassionate housing solutions.

Nick Bailey is Professor of Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow. He has long-standing interests in the analysis of housing and welfare policies, and their impacts on living conditions particularly in urban areas. He has particular interests in energy efficiency and sustainability of housing, in the re-growth of private renting and in urban segregation. He is Director of the ESRC-funded Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC) and Associate Director of the ESRC-funded Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (SCADR).

James is a Māori/Indigenous researcher with whakapapa (ancestry, genealogy) connections to Te Rarawa and Te Aupōuri iwi (tribes) of northern New Zealand. His doctoral research explored the interrelationships between the physical and social architecture in cohousing and papakāinga (Māori collective housing) communities. Now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, James teaches and researches ways in which our cities are, and can be, designed to champion themes of belonging, connection, and identity.
