New Methodologies For Analysing Longitudinal Data on Homelessness

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2020/21 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Professor Ann Berrington ([email protected]) (expert in Demography and Housing Projections) and Professor Peter Smith (expert in Statistical Modelling of Administrative Data) in partnership with Catherine Barham (Senior Analyst, MHCLG).

This project provides a unique opportunity for a student to work with case level longitudinal information on households experiencing periods of homelessness. It is the first time such detailed data on the composition and circumstances of households at risk of becoming homeless has been collected and analysed and is designed to monitor the Homelessness Reduction Act which came into force in April 2018. This is an extremely high profile area for the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. Findings will be used to improve the evidence base used for policy decision-making.

Skills Required

The student would require an MSc in quantitative social science or statistics. The student needs to be able to handle large and complex datasets and through their training will develop statistical modelling skills such as event history analysis, sequence analysis, and propensity score matching. The student will be expected to develop methodologies capable of analysing this new administratively linked dataset.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15009 (2019/20 UKRI rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master’s year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
