Housing Studies Association Annual Conference 2023

From the Floorboards Up: Foundations and Futures of Housing Justice

We are delighted to announce details of the next HSA Annual Conference and the opening of our call for papers and bursary applications! Our next hybrid conference will take place in Sheffield, between Wednesday 29th and Friday 31st March 2023

The theme of this year’s conference is housing justice. Everyone needs access to safe, decent, and affordable housing. For many across the world, however, housing continues to be experienced as a perpetual crisis. For decades, the supply of housing has not kept pace with demand and housing quality continues to vary substantially across places and spaces. The challenges of accessing and sustaining housing of any type is becoming increasingly difficult for more and more households and is set to worsen in the context of spiralling costs of living, including increases in energy, rent and mortgage costs. Experiences of displacement and homelessness are becoming more acute, not least because of the effects of war and climate change, with devastating consequences for those affected. And these are just some of the grand and global challenges faced by governments, housing researchers, practitioners, communities, and households.

Taking an aspirational approach, this conference aims to bring together individuals keen to explore the foundations and future of housing justice. The conference will be a platform for those seeking to disrupt, innovate and reimagine traditional understandings and approaches to housing, and/or to explore and promote alternative solutions to current challenges.
