Housing is fundamental to human security, well-being, and identity. Yet in contexts of war, forced displacement, and socio-political crisis, homes and neighbourhoods are often destroyed, damaged, or rendered insecure.

The Housing Studies Association is deeply saddened by the continued violence and humanitarian crises taking place in many parts of the world. We recognise the severe and lasting impacts that conflict and displacement have on individuals, families, and communities, not least through the destruction of housing, neighbourhoods, and essential infrastructure. The loss of homes has profound consequences for well-being, dignity, recovery, and long-term rebuilding.

These issues are deeply relevant to housing research, education, policy, and practice.

As a learned society, we believe our role is to provide a forum for rigorous, evidence-informed exchange on complex and sensitive questions. In that spirit, we are inviting expressions of interest to establish a new Member Network focused on:

Housing, Conflict and Displacement

This network will provide a dedicated space for members to:

  • Share research on housing destruction, displacement, and reconstruction
  • Explore the concept of domicide and related theoretical frameworks
  • Examine legal, human rights and policy dimensions of housing loss
  • Discuss the role of domestic space in refuge, hosting, and settlement
  • Develop comparative and interdisciplinary approaches
  • Foster collaboration across scholars, practitioners, and policymakers

The network will operate in line with the Association’s purpose: advancing housing-related research, education, policy and practice, and fostering dialogue across diverse perspectives.

Aims of the Network

Proposals should outline how the network would:

  • Contribute to scholarly advancement in this field
  • Create an inclusive and respectful space for debate
  • Support early-career researchers and doctoral students
  • Develop events, panels, workshops, or collaborative outputs
  • Strengthen links between research, practice, and policy

Eligibility

Member Networks are led by and for members of the Housing Studies Association. Proposals should be submitted by current members and identify at least two convenors.
